Feast of Shi Gan Dang

Introduction

The first written record of the evil-warding stone Shi gandang Gangdang can be traced back to Jijiuzhang, written by an eunuch called Shi You inthe Western Han Dynasty, and it is recorded that Shigangdang Shi Gangdang is a stone tablet, which was recorded invincible to everything. Then Tao Zongyi in the Yuan Dynasty noted recorded that “In front of the main gate of a house, orA stone tablet is built in thoroughfares such as doorway, street corners, alleyways or crossroads subject to evil influencesT-shape crossing as a talisman, placing a small stone tablet inscribed engraved with the Chinese characters ’Shigangdang”Shi Gangdang‘ can suppress evils.” Different places in his Nancun Chuogeng Lu (lit. Farming in Nan Village). have different styles for the Shi Gangdang Stones: bas-relief, alto-relievo, craved with Eight Diagram patternsculptures, or merely simply inscribed with engraved with the Chinese characters ’his name Shigangdong Shi Gangdong‘ or ’Mount Taishan Shi gangdongGangdong.‘ The original purpose of building upplacing a stone tablet is to from warding off ill omen and evils and misfortunes, but later it has come stretch into dispel ling windstorm, floods, evils, disasters and etcmore. A Shi Gangdang Stone Tong (770 A.D) tablet of   the Tang Dynasty (770 A.D.) was unearthed in the Song Dynasty, and the inscription upon this stone tablet indicates explained itsits functions of  suppressing ghosts, averting disasters, blessing the officials and citizens, and bringing prosperity to the society of in that period.

The Shi Gangdang Stone can suppress ghosts, averts disasters, blesses the officials and citizens, and brings prosperity to the society. 


Origin

There are many different legends about the origin of the evil-warding stone Shi Gangdang. A warrior of the Five Dynasties said that Shi Gangdang, who was a man with physical prowess, sacrificed himself for defending his master in a battle. A stone tablet was therefore established to commemorate him. Also, it was said that the stones on Eastern Mount Tai have unique occult and divine powers. Therefore, Taishan Shi Gangdang is worshiped as a divine stone.

It is said that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty once returned from Mount Tai with four stones and he put them at the four corners of his Palace in order to ward off evils. As Mount Tai was considered to have divine power to safeguard the country, its stone was also regarded as a divine safeguard to families. Later, the Mount Tai stone was considered as a deity to bless families, and personified with the name ‘Shi Gangdang’ or ‘Stone General.’ The stones later even have the carvings of human figures.

There is a myth saying that Mount Tai is  a commander in chief of ghosts who determines life and death. One legend mentions that Shi Gangdang is a general of God of Mount Tai who is known for his bravery. 

A myth saying that Jiang Ziya found himself not apotheosized while other generals had become deities successfully on Mount Tai. He pointed at a stone in front of the mountain, and announced and deified himself into Taishan Shi Gangdang.
